The TV show “The Masked Singer” from Asia has been successful worldwide ever since the appearance of its casting shows. The original idea started in 2015 and was named “King of Mask Singer”, but now the format has been adapted into various offshoots in Asia, the USA, and Europe. The show is produced in the USA and Europe by the Dutch company “Endemol,” which has already caused a stir in the past with “Big Brother.”
The concept of “The Masked Singer” is straightforward. Celebrities sing well-known songs and they are hidden under masks, portraying different animals and items. A jury has to guess who is hiding behind the veil. At the same time, the judges and the audience evaluate the vocal performances as well. At the end of each episode, the crowd eliminates one singer from the show, which is when the performers also lift their mask. The main attraction is that the celebrities, who are singing, are mostly amateurs. Participants can be actors, as well as other publicly well-known personalities.
Who Is Hiding under the Masks?
The success of the show stems from guessing who is hiding under these masks. Accordingly, the producers make a big secret about who is participating in the contest and few people on the team know who is hiding underneath. Celebrities are encouraged to keep this a secret in their closest family and friends too. They must also deny participation in the show if necessary. The reviews of the show are different because they range from entertaining to silly and mean.
The costumes are elaborate too. Up to 300 hours of handiwork go into making many of them. So, it’s no wonder that they cost between 15,000 and 20,000 Euros each. The show is now so successful that numerous major broadcasters are fighting for TV rights. There is now even a spin-off called “The Masked Dancer,” but that does not affect the success of the original broadcast.
“The Masked Singer” has been running in the US since 2019, and now it has already reached season 6, which will premier in September this year. Unsurprisingly, the show won the Emmy Award for Best Costumes in 2020. Numerous other nominations for the most important roles in show business on television followed. The ratings rocketed off very rapidly and reached around 14 million viewers during the finale of season 1. In the fifth season, however, these numbers have already halved.
Meanwhile, “The Masked Singer” is also enjoying enormous success in Europe. For example, the show set a new record in Germany, where the finale of season 2 achieved the highest ratings ever recorded for a show of the broadcaster “Pro7”. So, it is not surprising that show directors are also already working on a German implementation of the follow-up show “The Masked Dancer,” which is hoped to continue the run of this success. Hopefully, people will still love it as much as the singing version.
